EasyBackup

LinkedResources has developed a simple Applescript (EasyBackup) which allows you to effortlessly (well, almost) create offsite backups of your important files. For general information, visit http://www.linkedresources.com/services/offsitebackups.shtml. This page is for customer support.

Troubleshooting

Note that this troubleshooting applies to client Macintoshes running MacOS 9. I will post information for MacOS X when that version is released. Most problems can be solved by restarting your system. You don't have to try that first, but do restart and retry before calling.

If you are backing up to a remote volume over the Internet, verify that your Internet connection is working. Can you check your email and browse web sites? If not, you will need to resolve your connectivity issues with your ISP.

The backup process creates a file named "DailyBackup.sit" in your EasyBackup folder. This file is deleted the next time you run EasyBackup and replaced with a newly compressed version. Sometimes this file becomes corrupted and EasyBackup cannot delete it. Try deleting it manually if you're having trouble (if you see files named "DailyBackup.sit.1" or "Trash Me" or similar, delete them too). If you can't delete it, then try to move it or rename it. If all else fails, a restart should solve this problem.

If you cannot mount your remote volume, try mounting it manually by using the Chooser. Open the Chooser from the Apple menu (far upper left), click on Appleshare, click on "Server IP Address" and enter "backsaw.linkedresources.com". Do you get an error message? If so, this would be a good time to try a restart.

If you can manually mount your remote volume, but EasyBackup will not mount it, chances are that EasyBackup has lost its internal record of your remote volume information. If you know how to use Script Editor, you can open EasyBackup and check it yourself. Otherwise, call Jeff Baumann at 763-421-9375 or send me an email (link below, and I check my email more often). While I try to sort things out, EasyBackup will still work if you have manually mounted your remote volume first - just check the messages which come up and click the appropriate ones to complete the process.
